Dog Heart

by Breyten Breytenbach
Faber & Faber paperback

Not a coherent book, this consists of a series of chapters, without much order, which give an impressionistic as well as occasionally surrealistic view of life in South Africa after Apartheid. What becomes evident is that nothing is going well except violence in an atmosphere of revenge and bloodshed. But all of that in a mixed world, black and white and brown. Is that progress? Yes, but there are beautiful descriptions of the country; evocative, imaginative, rich in detail. We hear the birds and we see and feel and smell the lush countryside apparently so very beautiful. But finally, this is not a successful book.
